What is Cortisol?
Cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is a hormone from the adrenal cortex; it is the principal glucocorticoid. A synthetic preparation is used for its anti-inflamatory actions. Glucocorticoids are essential to life. They enable us to adapt to external changes and stress. They also maintain fairly consistent plasma glucose levels even when we go for long periods without ingesting food. Cortisol is the major corticosteroid. It is responsible for about 95% of all glucocorticoid activity in the body. Cortisol is known to:
- stimulate gluconeogenesis (creation of glucose) to ensure an adequate fuel supply;
- increase mobilization of free fatty acids, making them a more available energy source;
- decrease glucose utilization, sparing it for the brain;
- stimulate protein catabolism to release amino acids for use in repair, enzyme synthesis, and energy production;
- act as an anti-inflamatory agent;
- depress immune reactions; and
- increase the vasoconstriction caused by epinephrine.
Cortisol levels can be affected by many normal conditions, such as physical or emotional stress or strenuous activity. Abnormal conditions, such as infection or injury, can affect cortisol levels as well.
Why CortiSlim or Cortisyn?
CortiSlim or Cortisyn blocks the hunger caused by our body's release of cortisol. What is cortisol? Early humans evolved in a time when stress was only an occasional occurence and catching a meal required a great deal of effort. So to survive this scarcity of food, our body learned to release the hormone cortisol, which stimulates hunger and fat storage. The extra hunger drove us to work harder for our food and store more fat, which gave us more energy to survive.
The world is a little different now. We are literally bombarded by stress on an hourly basis, and food is everywhere. The result? For many of us, constant cortisol release creates a near 24-hour need to snack. Cortisol-Rx works in two ways. First, it stops us from over eating. And second, it speeds up our metabolism so we burn more calories from the food we do it. The result now? Normal appetite, high metabolism, and a lean body.
