Cortisol's Mechanism of Action
The stress-fat connection
We’re all familiar with a common reaction to stress. When we have a tough day, we reach for the chips or the ice cream or the candy. Even though we feel as though we’re "in control", our brain is reacting to stress and releasing a hormone called cortisol.
That hormone tells our bodies to do two things. The first message Cortisol sends is "Eat!" It’s probably an ancient response, dating back to a time when we needed calories to run away from dangerous animals or to walk all day carrying a pack. The second cortisol signal tells our body to store those calories as fat – again, a throwback to when food was scarce.
